Charles Matthews Talks Recruiting

Class of 2015 St. Rita shooting guard Charles Matthews has been hampered by an ankle injury to start the season.  The junior has missed the Mustangs first two contests, but expects to be back relatively soon.

We caught up with him to get an update on his game and recruitment.  The junior talked about his summer playing with Meanstreets where he averaged 12.4 points against the best players in the country.

“I think it went really well and I am starting to separate myself from my peers a little bit playing in the EYBL.  It is the highest competition I have played against in my life so far.  It went really well.”

Matthews has stated in the past that he wants to be a point guard long term, but that isn’t something he is putting as much emphasis on now.

“I am not really focusing on that.  As I get older I am focusing more on my versatility.  I am trying to learn to play as many positions as I can.  I can post up and don’t have a problem playing down low.  I am going to play my game where ever I am at.”

What are his goals for this season with St. Rita?

“Winning.  We have the talent and coaching to do it.  We have the depth to win.  I think we should be able to win a high amount of games and a state championship.”

Matthews isn’t paying too much attention to recruiting right now as he is focusing on his high school season.  He cut his list down to 10 in the fall.

“Illinois, Michigan State, Kansas, Marquette, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Kentucky, SMU, Duke, and Stanford.”

Duke is the only one of those programs who hasn’t offered.  He spoke about what stands out when it comes to the Blue Devils.

“First of all you know who Coach K is.  That name speaks for itself.  To have him come by the gym and showing interest you can’t turn a program down like that without getting to know them better.  I am focusing on seeing how they play and building a relationship with them.”

Illinois recently got a commitment from his close friend DJ Williams of Simeon and has put themselves in good early position.

“I have had a relationship with them since early on.  I have been focusing on seeing how they are going to play and how their players are getting better.  Me and Illinois have a great relationship.  They have a great relationship with my family as well.”

He visited Kentucky during the fall and got more familiar with their fan base.

“They have some great fans down there.  They love their basketball.  You see how serious the basketball program is.”

Michigan State was another unofficial visit that he took in recent months.

“It was crazy.  I went down for their Midnight Madness, met the players, and got to spend some time with the coaching staff.”

Ohio State has been recruiting the guard and he is impressed with what they have to offer.

“I like how they are in the area.  They are well coached and are doing great things with their program.”

Kansas has also done a tremendous job recruiting Matthews.  They recently landed Curie’s Cliff Alexander and Matthews has a tight relationship with assistant Jerrance Howard.  What is his timetable for an ultimate college decision?

“Hopefully next year around this time.  I want to do it before the season starts.  It is not an official timeline.  Just whenever I get that for sure feeling of where I want to go.”
